GM 🎞️ Moments of the Unknown. 339 March 11th at 10:06 in New York, New York

Walking the floor of the @whitneymuseum biennial you will see all forms of materials and mediums in dialogue. Artists were chosen from all over the world representing what “American Art” means today. The curators posed a challenging question: Is American Art born in the geographical proximity of America? Or, is American Art an ideal that can be remotely accessed through a conceptual framework? That is, a region affected by American colonialism through conflict and geopolitical trauma. The piece that touched me was “Sanhattan” by Ignacio Gatica. The large images act like windows into other city spaces, turning the space into a constructed urban view platform where you move through it as if walking through an unfinished building. There were stories on the back printed into metal that spoke on how we need to recognize and honor city workers, like the sanitation workers, especially since they do the hard and quiet work that requires a city to continue to function, rain or shine, night and day. It opened my eyes with deep gratitude for the invisible forces that clean the city while we work and sleep. This exhibition left me motivated to keep going and make more art so someday I can be included in the conversation of what it means to make American Art. What is that for me? Well, Moments of the Unknown is a testament to that idea. A journey across all 50 states, meeting kind people with countless stories and seeing the beautiful nature that makes this country rich with green. And at the same time, bringing those values across the globe to yearn to learn about other cultures and be open towards new experiences. Personally. I think American Art today symbolizes an opportunity, a bridge between tradition and integration. We have the tools. It’s about connecting with each other, connecting the past to the present to the future.
