OpenAI has launched the "Codex for Open Source" initiative, offering six months of free ChatGPT Pro to core maintainers of open source projects, along with conditional access to API credits and security tools. This initiative stems from the previous $1 million Codex Open Source Fund. That fund primarily provided API credits to help open source teams automate processes like PR reviews using Codex. Now it has been upgraded—directly providing ChatGPT Pro accounts, allowing maintainers to use it for daily coding, code reviews, and issue handling. The application threshold is not too high—core maintainers or widely used public projects can apply, and even if they do not fully meet the criteria, OpenAI encourages submissions with explanations.
